OUR VISION:
To see all of St. Augustine gather in community, be transformed by God’s grace,
making much of Jesus Christ, enjoying Him forever.
Anthony Widener
Anthony and his wife, Denea, have been married for 17 years and live in St. Augustine, FL. God has blessed them with four wonderful children through foster care: Jude (8), Nick (7), Noah (6), and Alivia (2).
Anthony grew up in Palm Bay, FL, where he excelled in sports like baseball, basketball, soccer, and track. Sports were his passion—his god, as he looks back on it now. Though he grew up in a church with faithful teaching, his understanding of Jesus was more intellectual than personal. After high school, Anthony pursued college basketball, attending five different schools before injuries forced him to quit. Without sports, he found himself searching for purpose.
It wasn’t until March 2002, while living in Jacksonville with his parents, that God opened Anthony’s eyes to his need for a Savior. It was a sweet time of confessing sin, picking up the Bible, and truly desiring to know the Lord. After graduating from the University of North Florida, God called him into campus ministry, where he launched a unique ministry focused on studying God’s Word and serving the broken spaces of Jacksonville.
Anthony and Denea helped plant a church in Jacksonville, and through that experience, he felt stirred to plant a church of his own. But after going through a church-planting assessment, he realized God had more work to do in his heart, marriage, and family. That season of waiting led them to Guatemala, where they helped friends start Buena Vista Sports Academy, a ministry using soccer to share the gospel.
Returning to Florida, Anthony established Christ-centered gyms in NE Florida, using fitness as a way to reach people with the gospel. Later, he launched an online faith and fitness platform for missionaries around the world to help them stay healthy as they spread the gospel. Now, Anthony and his family are on mission once again, planting The Axis Church in St. Augustine, excited to see how God will work in this new season.
